…IAAT-ians have a bigger role to play than even the IIT-ians of India …IAAT teachers, will transform our society, shape the lives of our children, parents and the community.

I was beginning to understand and see my purpose, wanting to touch a life or creating a difference is growing stronger. I can watch my thoughts, actions and words more clearly and lastly there is an immense gratitude towards our facilitators for creating this wonderful space and programme and most importantly to those who have triggered my data points allowing myself to go deeper.

(IAAT teacher) is open to feedback and willing to learn…has the right subject knowledge and is empathetic. She waits for the last child of her class to understand concepts before moving on.
New to the profession…..through class observations and interactions with other teachers she is picking up these skills quickly. We love her temperament and attitude to work.

At the end I will just like to say that it was a once in a life-time experience. I have found a bit of myself with this trip and I am hoping by the end of our session I will discover an all new Shilpi.

Was it an eye-opener, or was it a mirror, was it about self-awareness or self-empowerment, was it about learning how to be a teacher or about how to be a human-being? Lying under the stars I thought to myself … aren’t we just like these stars that shine because of the light within. Just like each star needs the support of the clouds, the city lights to be low, the pollution levels to be low for it to be visible, the IAAT faculty is the support and the space to us today.

I feel I’m a changed person because I’ve learnt to spend time with my own self. I have got back a beautiful set of friends with me, lots of positivity and energy. I have positive vibrations from my gurus. I would sincerely stop judging people and not bring any negative thoughts inside me. I will stop living with my fears and just live life completely. I have started seeing dreams again and will take small steps towards them.

Reflections after every task were like a Pandora’s box. It opened new perspectives and a new/forgotten me emerged out of them. It made me aware about the untapped and unlimited potential that every human carry’ - including me, and how we need to recognize and work upon it.
The insights that I am carrying forward with me are - A belief that no matter what obstacles arise or what difficulties I face I will continue to strive and take risks. I will stop judging people. I will give up on my stories and will courageously follow my heart. I will never lose my connect with the real me and will keep it empowered with some “me time”.

It has been one of the best times of my life. I got a chance to meet myself, something I had lost over a period of time. I met with my dreams, which were had with time. I’m ready to take challenges. I was in my comfort zone and was not ready to come out of it.

(I wonder if I am learning Maths or learning to be a better human being or learning to be a good teacher. It is quite amazing that the course can accomplish all three of them under this umbrella.

I Am A Teacher has a unique way of imparting knowledge and teaching methodology - compelling and demanding at the same time. The learning culture here is focused on building self and growing together. Seldom have I come across a culture that invests so heavily into building a community with love, trust, acceptance, freedom, authenticity and empathy.

I have finally found a direction and a path; where it would lead, I do not know. But there is contentment on that path, and a sense of purpose and satisfaction. So, it seems a risk worth taking.

It’s been a learning experience. IAAT has given me a platform to reflect on my experience of 15 years of teaching and has helped me come out of my comfort zone ……I need to demonstrate my best self. IAAT's coaching programs have helped me get into the shoes of a coach and empowered me to be Collaborating Teacher, a coach and a mentor who could guide my residents …… aim and achieve well.

I feel I have grown both professionally as well as personally during this entire journey. You suddenly realise that you now have an adult in your classroom ……to be a role model in all respects, so you go that extra mile to make that happen for your resident. Mentoring adults is a different ball game altogether. Acting as a coach for residents is an immense responsibility which requires a lot of planning and reflection and to achieve this you increase your own skill set. The presence of one more person in class has always helped my children as they get that special attention and their learning gaps are taken care of at that very moment. Finally, when your resident says “thank you” …. that moment is very precious!

This is an amalgamation of science and philosophy of education; knowledge of purpose of various subjects; psychology of child and society and indomitable necessity of human values inspired me to become a teacher who is a seeker, a facilitator, a learner, a challenger and a guide.

How do I create an environment buzzing with ‘cognitive energy’? An environment where the children develop a thirst for knowledge? How do I facilitate learning? What is required of me to help them in their learning journey? How long does it take and how painful is it? Does it require me to become an actor? How do I listen to simple observations with wonder, or push myself to become excited at every little thing they do? How do I deal with their behavior which might be unacceptable to my moral mindscape? What if I can’t help them in resolving their issues and they don’t forgive me for that? How do I push them to go forth with their unfinished ideas, or is there even a need to do so? How do I restrain myself from giving advice, to stop them if I’m sure that they are making a mistake? And how can this entire process happen in a span of just one year, as they will move to another grade in the next year with another teacher? How can one teacher significantly influence a child when they hop from one teacher to another as they progress through grade levels? So many questions, not enough answers....My time at IAAT has helped me to think more deeply about these issues.

The introduction of the new concept of JODOGYAN took all my fears of Math away on day one! I started waiting for math sessions and when we were called to solve problems on the board and I was the one, who always raised my hand to solve it. Oh my god, it’s me! Who used to be terrified of math, now raising her hand on every question!

I still began my journey at IAAT to explore the new horizons…. Each and every day I learned something new without studying formally.

I experienced the power of collaborating in a learning community. Another beautiful insight that I have imbibed is that I now try to put myself in the other person’s shoes in any unfavorable situation. Thinking from the other person’s perspective really helps a lot. As an educator, I have created an ideal teacher in my ideas and dreams who will always be the perfect destination to reach at.

Poem in praise of a Faculty member

A chance encounter with ‘I Am A Teacher’ (IAAT) Teacher Development Program in 2016, gave me the hope and encouragement that I needed to ‘be and lead the change’ I wished to see in our education space. The program got me head to head with my fears, apprehensions, physical constraints and mental blocks. As an IAAT Resident Teacher, I am accepted and celebrated for who I am - a unique individual. I am learning to be an educator who leads by example- transforming myself to reflect the transformation in children and my peers. A tall order, I know. But IAAT tells me, and I believe, “I can.”

I have butterflies in my tummy and my hands quiver every time I have to be in front of a class, but the excitement to learn, hands-on classroom practice, and the family-like community we have built in this course is enabling me to keep trying to do justice to myself. For the first time, it’s not my home, my kids, my husband, but ME. I have finally got a chance to challenge myself, to learn and to grow.

I am genuinely excited for a new batch to take the journey that we did... From trying to remember each other’s names at the retreat to immersing in each other's lives and emerging with satisfaction of so much exposure, knowledge, camaraderie and confidence that this course has provided us with tools for lifelong learning and teaching... And would continue to do for so many others each year.
